I enjoyed reading about your interviews today. What I find SO distressing is the way Palestinian Israelis are treated. The story you related about the woman who as a little girl wanted an Israeli flag, but her father said, "No" and she didn't understand why reminded me SO much of when I was little, and some of the other kids who went to my elementary school had these really sweet little bibles, and I wanted one, but my parents wouldn't go along...also, when I wanted to have a Christmas tree, and my parents' explanation was that we were Jews, and Jews don't have Christmas. Being kept outside the mainstream culture is really tough for children. I can understand why Israel is not interested in having a bunch of Palestinian flags flying, but I don't understand why Arab Israelis are treated so shabily, and I DO understand why they feel a split allegience. I can't imagine how you can immerse yourself in this cultural goo and not feel really depressed and hopeless. I hope you have another really great day tomorrow!
